Sugar South Label Process Session
Sugar South is an all-natural hair removal business that provides sugaring services in St. Pete. The owner Justin handmakes all their sugar from only three organic ingredients: sugar, lemon, and water. He came to us with a goal to sell the sugar wholesale to a select number of high-end clientele, and thus needed a new look for his product. He wanted the look to be luxurious, and he drew inspiration from a candle line he carries at the business that has gold foiled lettering set against a black label. He was also interested in reimagining the Sugar South logo in the process, and wanted to emulate the lettering style of the neon sign he had recently installed at the front of the company’s building.
Pulling inspiration from their ingredients, website, current photography, and motifs, our Creative Director Angela Stork wanted to lean into lemon visuals. Taking further inspiration from lemon trees in her backyard, she envisioned a product label with custom link work and illustrations to bring all aspects of Sugar South’s vision to life.
Angela holds an MFA in Illustration and loves drawing and painting as well as creating vector illustrations. So, she began the process by sketching lemon trees in her yard, and creating hand lettering by tracing a photograph of the business’s sign. She then photographed and transferred the sketches into Adobe Photoshop to clean up. From there, everything is brought into Adobe Illustrator, image traced, and cleaned up further. A color palette came together with high contrast and neon effects.
