What led you to choose your PY internship over other opportunities?‍

I had always wanted to experience the inner workings of a marketing agency. Being a Marketing student at the time, I had always felt that hands on experience goes a long way further than what is learnt in the classroom.

Funnily enough, at the time I was applying, I had a very good paying job at a restaurant. Not at all related to my degree but the income was attractive. I was searching for different internships with the idea of only applying if one really caught my attention. When I came across Pyper, it was exactly everything I had been looking for. I told myself, this is the only opportunity I would leave my current job for. In the end, it was the best decision I could have made.

What did you learn in your PY internship that you took with you to your career?

A major aspect of it for me was learning how different departments commutative with each other and how crucial clear communication and planning are in bringing together structure to perform effectively. It is one of those things that, as an outsider, you know it is essential to a successful business, but knowing it and seeing it are two very different things.

To add to that were three things I think go hand in hand. Those are; to not micromanage, don’t give too clear of a description because you can disrupt the creativity, and be receptive to criticism. These three things were showcased a lot throughout my time at Pyper and are drivers in any business.

What were the benefits you found in interning for a small company?

As expected, working in a small company allows you to see all levels of the business. Having fresh eyes allows you to see how the gears move. I was able to get more hands-on experience and see the business process from beginning to end. I think with less people, it also allows for stronger relationships building. I was able to ask about the team’s personal career development and get a better idea of what possibilities are out there.

Another major benefit which I can’t fail to mention is the exposure to the operating within the different teams. I was able to move around to creative and content as an accounts intern. Even though it was brief, I was able to explore different options, see what I did and didn’t like and potentially open the window to an alternative paths.
