82° West Distilling

Tampa's first craft rum distillery

While constructing the first distillery in Hillsborough County, local business partners turned to our agency to rebrand their rum company starting with a new name and look, which were executed in bottle labels, packaging, website, business suite, menu cards, and merchandise.

The brand encompasses the founders’ love for sailing and trips to various islands where they savored many types of rum, inspiring them to launch their own distillery. Touted as the “Rum for the Sailor at Heart,”  the new name, 82º West Distilling, was derived from the nautical coordinates of their location in historic Seminole Heights: 82º 45’ West, 28º 00’ North.

Aspects of the brand include a gold compass mark, a blues and browns color palette reminiscent ocean and sandbar hues, photography from their own personal adventures over the years, and custom illustrations. Each flavor in the 82º West Distilling line is represented by its own unique, hand-drawn illustration of the ingredients, such as Coconut Breeze, or the flavor name, such as "Mutiny."

Nestled amid modern skyscrapers and beloved old bungalows, 82° West Distilling is now open in the hip, but historic, community of Seminole Heights. Built on history, the distillery is housed in the renovated building once home to Larry Jackson Automotive at the corner of Florida Ave. and Lambright St. With a latitude of 28° N and a longitude of 82° W, the distillery’s name is an ode to its location."

82° West Distilling uses all natural ingredients, from spices to flavorings, distilling the finest quality rum. Each flavor is carefully crafted through a refining process to uncover a perfectly balanced spirit. The distillery offers daily tours of the stills, a tasting room to try new flavors, and sells bottles and merchandise for the sailor—or pirate—at heart.

The labels came to fruition with custom illustrations at the forefront of the design. The front labels feature a custom die-cut shape and metallic gold foil. The illustrations are slightly transparent, and their color depends on the rum’s decided collection.

The type treatment of the flavor is also specific to the collection for which it belongs. The current rum collections include:

  • The Classics Collection with Gulf Coast Gold Rum, 1911, and American Pie
  • The Gasparilla Collection with the flagship flavor Mutiny, and Bombshell
  • The Limited Edition Collection with 420
  • The Tropics Collection with Coconut Breeze and Paradise
