For nearly 50 years, American Stage has been St. Petersburg's professional theatre company, telling stories that celebrate the human experience through thought-provoking productions and community programs that reach far beyond the stage. As we have a long-established relationship with the arts in St. Pete, American Stage's blend of artistic ambition and community purpose made this a natural fit for our agency.
American Stage came into the partnership with a loyal, engaged base, but that base skewed older and primarily female, and the theatre needed to build traction with a younger audience. St. Pete's entertainment scene is a crowded one, with no shortage of ways to spend an enjoyable evening, which meant the competition wasn't just other theatres—it was every other option pulling at the same entertainment dollars and free time. With a new season on the horizon, American Stage needed a marketing strategy that could grow awareness among new audiences while continuing to serve the patrons who'd supported the organization for decades.
We developed a multi-channel strategy for American Stage, built around a clear funnel: create awareness among younger target audiences, earn consideration by making the case for American Stage's time and dollars, and drive conversion. We balanced tactics built to introduce the organization to new audiences with consistent communication that keeps existing patrons engaged, promoting individual shows and season subscriptions.
The season marketing came together across paid and organic tactics, including digital, content, print, and on-site touchpoints. On the digital side, we built landing pages for the season and subscription offerings and refreshed the homepage and user flow through key parts of the website. American Stage already had a robust audience database, and we put it to work through a combination of newsletters and e-blasts. Newsletters kept the full database engaged throughout the season, while targeted blasts promoted individual shows, subscription packages, education, and advancement opportunities based on audience behaviors. Recipients responded with strong open and click through rates all season long.
That digital push was reinforced on the ground. Inside the venue itself, environmental signage carried the season's messaging through the space, interior and exterior, reinforcing the brand for every patron who walked through the door. The season Arts Guide, rack cards, posters, yard signs, and direct mail kept American Stage visible well beyond its own lobby. A full paid media mix extended that visibility even further, keeping traditional print in front of existing audiences while layering in targeted digital and OTT to bring in younger audiences. Radio spots and on-air ticket giveaways built excitement for the season across the Bay area.
Our work extended past the core season calendar, too, into American Stage's Advancement efforts, including Broadway by Candlelight, American Stage's annual fundraiser and one of its biggest donor and community events of the year, Opening Night in the Park, and general donor communications and materials, helping to generate philanthropic support in an environment where arts organizations are constantly under pressure. We also supported Education across two semesters of classes and workshops, plus summer camps, with email marketing and direct mail for key programs.

American Stage in the Park—their most well-known production and a flagship moment for the organization each year—received additional dedicated marketing support. This year, the show was Into the Woods. Signage went up around the Demens Landing Park venue itself, while the paid media plan expanded throughout the region to include billboards and print and digital media with wider geographic distributions to reach beyond the existing subscriber base. As the theatre's highest-visibility event, Park draws an audience beyond its regular patrons, luring tourists as well as locals, positioning the show as an entry point for people experiencing American Stage for the first time. That made it one of the strongest awareness-to-consideration drivers in the season, with messaging built to turn first-time Park Show attendees into future single-ticket buyers and, eventually, subscribers.
We designed the show art for key productions in the new season, which had to hold up individually across posters, rack cards, and digital ads, while cohering into a single, unmistakably American Stage identity for the season. Rather than applying one visual template across the board, each piece of art was designed to fit that specific production's tone, while staying grounded in shared brand elements, so the full lineup still read as one season.
Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B was among our favorite designs of the year. A feminist reinvention of the classic detective story, the art was mysterious and intriguing, reflecting the show's quirky, crime-meets-comedy premise.
The multi-channel approach gave American Stage a strong return against the goals we set out to achieve. Each promotional push drove a clear rise in web traffic to show landing pages, with the sharpest spikes arriving once paid tactics activated, showing a direct line between paid investment and audience attention. Within that traffic, targeted paid social was proven especially effective at reaching new, younger audiences and building awareness of the season. Email marketing held its own alongside it, remaining one of the top two or three channels sending patrons to the site throughout the season.
Together, these results speak directly to the twofold goal that shaped the strategy from the start: bringing in the next generation of theatregoers while keeping American Stage's loyal, longtime base engaged. Digital, print, on-site, and content all played a part in getting there, building awareness with new audiences while giving longtime patrons every reason to keep coming back.
